Which wire? Kits ship 20 AWG solid-core wire rated for direct burial, and maximum loop length is a transmitter spec, not a gauge spec, so 20 AWG is not holding your range back. Bench Test the Kit
30 minDo this the day the kit arrives, not dig day. Inventory the box against the manual's list first: some kits include a surge module, gel capsules, and long contact points; others ship 1,000 feet of wire and 100 flags but no surge kit at all. Whatever is missing goes on this week's shopping list, not Saturday morning's.
Get the collar powered correctly. Lithium-ion collars charge in about 2 hours. Don't top them up nightly, though, because that shortens battery life. Other models take a proprietary battery module or a 9-volt; check which yours uses now, not on dig day.
Read the transmitter's range/mode switch chart before you plan a single foot of wire. Many transmitters use a range switch keyed to loop length: a low setting for typical yards, a high setting for large loops up to about 8,600 feet. Check your unit's chart. Then set stimulation: level 1 on some systems is tone-and-vibration only, and the manuals key levels to temperament, not size (2-3 timid, 4-6 average, 7-8 stubborn). Set it provisionally by the temperament table now; the real check happens on training day 1. The right level produces subtle recognition (ears up, head tilt, skin twitch), and a yelp means too high: drop one level.
Now the bench test: spread a 10-foot length of wire into a circle on the floor, connect both ends to the transmitter, and approach with the collar and test light. A beep about a foot from the wire proves the transmitter, loop alarm, collar, and battery in five minutes, before you own any trench.
The Five-Minute Warranty Test
The short loop is your fault-isolator forever after. Collar beeps on the short loop but not on the yard loop? The hardware is fine. The problem is your wire or layout. Fails the short loop? That's a warranty call, not a digging problem.
Collar Matching Traps
Dual-frequency transmitters need every collar re-synced after any frequency change, or range silently collapses. And two collar families from the same brand can be mutually incompatible, so verify compatibility before buying a second collar.
One testing gotcha: collars carry over-correction protection that shuts them down during repeated triggering, so a healthy collar can read dead mid-test. Walk away for a few minutes, then re-test before blaming the hardware.
Plan Your Layout
30 minDo this days before you dig, while the 811 clock runs. Draw one continuous loop around the entire house, so the dog can leave by any door and still be inside the boundary. Some competitors still publish backyard-only and hourglass layouts that leave the house outside the loop; reject them. A dog that slips out the front door of one of those layouts is already past its boundary, wearing a live collar, with no safe way home. Wire crossing the driveway is normal, so plan on it (driveway and sidewalk crossings).
Layout rules:
- Pick the transmitter spot now (indoor, dry, standard non-GFCI outlet, near where the wire can exit the wall; full constraints in Step 5) and anchor your loop sketch to that exit point
- Round every corner to a 3-foot minimum radius, because sharp turns create boundary gaps
- Keep the loop at least 10 feet from the road, and treat that as a floor
- Cross buried utilities at 90 degrees; keep parallel runs 5+ feet off electrical, phone, TV, and satellite lines
- Keep your own parallel runs 5+ feet apart
- Large metal structures can distort the field, so walk-test nearby runs; if the beep line wavers, move the wire a few feet farther away and re-test
- Robot mower? Route the dog-fence wire outside the mower's loop with a deliberate gap between the two
Survey the neighbors before you buy. Knock on every adjacent dog-owning door and ask two questions: which brand, and where does the wire run? Route your shared leg 10 feet inside their line (never under 5), and if they run the same brand you were about to buy, buy a different-carrier system instead; pros preemptively set new installs to an alternate frequency for exactly this reason. Cheap at purchase time, painful after.
Dead wire still interferes. An abandoned loop from an old system distorts a live one. Cut any legacy loop in several places to kill its continuity, and keep 5 feet off any buried wire you can't remove.
Sprinklers are on you. 811 marks only utility-owned lines, never private irrigation or landscape lighting. Run each zone, flag heads as they pop, flag the straight runs between heads and valve boxes, stay 6 inches clear, and hand-dig anywhere suspect.
If a Neighbor Has a Fence
Two loops within 10 feet of each other distort the signal, and same-frequency wire fires your collar wherever it goes. Survey first; the full diagnosis and fix ladder is in the neighbor section near the end of this guide.
Compare full layouts in layout patterns, wall off pools and gardens with exclusion zones, and sketch yours to scale in the fence planner before you buy wire.
Lay Out the Wire Above Ground
30-45 minStart at the transmitter's wire-exit point and walk the route on top of the grass. Nothing gets buried yet. This pass is where you adjust corner radii, bed lines, and the exact crossing point.
Pay wire off the spool correctly. Pulling loops off the end of a flat-lying spool adds one torsion twist per loop; twists become spirals, then kinks. Run a rod or piece of rebar through the spool as an axle so it spins as wire pays out under light tension. A kink work-hardens the copper and nicks the insulation, a delayed break site you'll hunt years from now.
Leave slack everywhere: about 20% extra footage gets eaten by trench contouring and settling. Never pull wire tight: ground shift and root growth turn tight runs into tension breaks.
Flag As You Go
Plant a provisional flag every 10 feet as you lay wire. The route stays visible while you work, and you'll move the flags to the beep line in Step 8.
Splice and Twist the Return Pair
30 minTwisted pair goes wherever the dog must cross freely: the return run from the loop to the transmitter, feeds to interior exclusion loops around pools or gardens, and small gate loops. Two rules govern it. Twisted sections splice between two single-wire sections, never into the middle of one run, because a single conductor can't cancel itself. And twisted footage counts double against transmitter capacity, so cap it at half your loop length.
Make it at 10-12 twists per foot. Drill method: anchor two equal lengths, chuck the far ends, and spin. Stop at 12, because over-twisting damages the wire. Buying pre-twisted wire (our store) skips the chore. One myth to retire: running wire through pipe does not cancel the signal. PVC does nothing and metal pipe actively interferes. Every splice, same recipe: strip 3/8 to 1/2 inch, cap with a wire nut leaving no exposed copper, tie a strain-relief knot 3-4 inches back, seal the nut inside a gel-filled capsule, pull-test it, and write down where it is. Bury a 2-inch-diameter slack loop at every splice so ground movement pulls the loop, not the joint.
You'll splice where the twisted pair meets the loop, where you add wire mid-run, and at every future repair. Fewer is better: three or more splices on one run is the threshold to replace the run. Know how splices fail, too. Bare nuts and taped joints corrode into partial breaks that read as flaky signal, not a clean break alarm, and a pulled-loose splice takes down the whole system. Splice Like the Manuals Say
Wire nut, strain-relief knot, gel capsule, location recorded. Every time. The manuals are blunt about why: most boundary-wire breaks happen at splices.
Install the Transmitter and Surge Protection
20 minMount the transmitter indoors in a dry spot (garage, basement, or shed) at least 3 feet from large metal objects and appliances, close to your home's grounding electrode, using the bracket or template in the box. Route the wire out through a window gap, under a door, through a crawl-space vent, or a drilled-and-caulked wall hole, never pinched by a window, door, or garage door, which damages it over time. No indoor outlet anywhere? A weatherproof outdoor box is the manufacturer-sanctioned exception.
Skip GFCI Outlets
Nearby lightning can trip a GFCI outlet, and the fence dies silently until someone resets it. Garages are exactly where code puts GFCI. Use a standard grounded outlet if you can; if you can't, add the tripped-GFCI check to your mental checklist. A $40-60 UPS rides out power outages too.
A power strip cannot protect the transmitter, because surges arrive through the buried loop wire, not just the outlet. Land the loop's two ends on the transmitter's boundary terminals by way of a fence-rated surge protector (our store) (about $22 for the module class) that clamps the AC side and both loop terminals, plugged into a grounded 3-prong outlet. If your brand uses a transmitter ground terminal instead, run 14-18 AWG solid copper to the grounding electrode, kept short with swept bends, and remove that ground wire once a plug-in surge module is installed. Set the Boundary Width and Test
30 minNever bury wire you haven't tested. Power up, confirm the loop light, and calibrate with a walk-test.
The walk-test, done like the manual: set stimulation to 2 or higher, since a tone-only level 1 may not register on the test light. Buckle the collar strap closed as if worn, receiver hanging at 6 o'clock, contact points up at 12, test light clipped across the points. Stoop so the collar rides at your dog's actual neck height; carrying it at waist height gives false dead-zone readings. Pick a straight section at least 50 feet long, start from the middle of the yard, and walk toward the wire. The test light flashes about 2 seconds after the warning beep.
Turn the transmitter's boundary-width dial until the collar beeps 6 to 10 feet from the wire on each side of it. Dial pegged and the beep line still wrong? Flip the range switch from Step 1's chart and re-test from scratch. Roughly the outer 20% of the field is warning tone, the inner 80% correction. Between passes, walk back into the yard until the beeping stops. Repeated exposure triggers over-correction protection and the collar reads falsely dead.
Then widen the test:
- Check four points around the loop for a consistent beep line
- Walk the entire yard interior and inside the house: a too-wide field fires the collar through exterior walls, and fence signal can couple onto TV, electrical, and phone lines
- Keep walking toward the wire past the beep: the light flashes brighter as you enter the run-through zone. That's your outbound-protection check, done before the dog ever wears the collar
- Mode gotcha: on yard-maximizing "Mode A"-type systems the warning zone starts at the wire (the beep line is the wire line), and that mode supports only a single loop with no exclusion zones
Your dog never wears the collar during installation or testing. Carry it at neck height by hand.

Bury the Wire
2-3 hoursAim for a 4-6 inch trench. That's the depth professional crews use, deep enough to clear the core aerators and edgers that cause most wire breaks. Most manufacturer manuals allow 1-3 inches, and it works, but a shallow slit sits right where those tools reach, so it breaks more often over the years. Burial protects the wire, not the signal: depth does not change the correction in this range, so bury deep for durability, then re-walk-test and nudge the width dial only if the beep line moved. Lawn: drive a flat spade along the flag line, rock it to open the trench toward 4-6 inches, advance one blade width, repeat; a rented walk-behind trencher does it faster on a big yard. Seat the wire at the bottom with a dull tool (a paint stick or weeding tool), because sharp tools nick insulation. Pin escapers with lawn staples, kick the soil back, and stomp the seam shut. Taking the fast, shallow route instead? A lawn edger's 1-3 inch slit works if you flag and avoid the line before any aeration or edging. With two people, one cuts while the other follows, seating wire in the fresh cut.
Time the soil, not the calendar: trench when soil is moist but not saturated, ideally 24-48 hours after a soaking rain, or deep-water the route the day before. Damp clay cuts markedly easier than bone-dry clay, but saturated clay is heavier and stickier, not easier. Pre-water hard, compacted spots lightly about an hour ahead.
Renting a machine? Tie 3 feet of wire to a stake behind it, lower the cutter, and let the machine pay wire in as it cuts. Never pull the wire. Small wire-laying units run about $40-50 for a half day; compact walk-behind trenchers, $150-250 per day. Either class lays roughly 1,000 feet in a half day.
Driveways and sidewalks: use an existing expansion joint first. Otherwise kerf about 1/2 inch deep with the masonry blade: slow, shallow passes, pausing so the blade doesn't overheat, goggles on. The slot must be clean and dry; push backer rod into anything deeper than 3/8 inch, then seal with self-leveling polyurethane or surface-matched caulk, above freezing only, and smooth it within 5 minutes. Deepen the cut or sleeve a short PVC stub where pavement meets lawn, because string trimmers work exactly that line. Asphalt: a $5 diamond wheel on an angle grinder, then asphalt patch. Won't cut at all? A drive-over rubber crossing strip covers surface wire, or water-bore a PVC sleeve under the slab (sand-base driveways only, and no deeper than 3-4 inches or the surface field suffers). Gravel and dirt: sleeve the wire in PVC conduit or an old garden hose, never metal pipe.
Mulch and rock beds: skip the trench. Staple the wire to the soil surface under the mulch or stone so it stays findable for repairs, and keep it a foot inside the bed's cut edge, since re-edging is a documented break cluster.
No digging at all: ground-staple the wire every 2-5 feet, or fasten it to a stable nonmetal surface with insulated clips sized for the wire. Never pierce or pinch the insulation. Nicks Are $135 Time Bombs
A nicked jacket doesn't fail today. It corrodes and fails in cascades months or years later, at $135+ per professional repair trip. Dull seating tools and careful backfill are the cheap version of that bill.
Installing in winter? Two phases: lay and staple the wire above ground on frozen turf (the fence works immediately), then bury after the spring thaw. The driveway crossing is the one step that waits for an above-freezing day; kerf sealants won't cure in the cold.
Flag the Line, Re-test, and Document
20-30 minFlagging is two motions. Walk toward the wire with the collar at neck height, contact points up, and plant a flag at the first beep; then retreat into the yard until the beeping stops. Repeat every 10 feet around the loop. On driveways and other hard surfaces, lay flags flat. On "Mode A"-type systems the Step 6 note applies: your flag line sits at the wire itself.
Re-walk the full boundary after burial with the collar and test light, since burial can nudge the beep line.
Then document like a pro:
- Photograph the route before grass closes over it
- Draw a contractor-ready map with every splice location and the transmitter settings
- Store the repair spool and spare capsules with the map, and save weaned flags; you'll re-flag after moves or layout changes
- Brief every lawn, aeration, and plow crew, and flag the line before any yard work: aeration, re-edging, tree work, and plowing are the named break-makers
The Collar Is a Wire Tracer
Years later, when grass has erased the route: turn boundary width down to about a foot and walk with the receiver in hand. It beeps directly over the wire. Flag as you go.
Training Your Dog: The Handoff#
The Fence Is Half the Job
Plan on 14+ days of structured training before off-leash time and about 4 weeks before unsupervised yard access, and some dogs need longer. Age gate: at least 6 months old with a reliable come and sit.
First live wear is training day 1, never during install. Fit the collar with your dog standing: contact points under the neck, touching skin. Trim a long coat (never shave it), or fit the longer contact points from the box. One finger fits between strap and neck; recheck after several minutes and again once the dog relaxes. Never clip a leash to the receiver. Run a separate non-metallic collar above it. Wear rules: 12 hours a day maximum, reposition every 1-2 hours, daily skin checks. Details in preventing collar sores.
Week one in brief: three sessions a day, 10-15 minutes each. Day 1 is flags plus the warning cue: wiggle the flag after each retreat, master 3-4 flags per session, and end every session with at least 5 minutes of play inside the flags. Don't let the dog camp inside the beep zone, because collars escalate the correction on lingering. Watch for stress signals: ears tucked, tail down, pulling toward the house. Between sessions in weeks 1-2 the yard is not containment: pen, tie-out, or leash.
Leaving the yard, from day one: receiver off, regular collar on, one fixed exit spot, one release word, always leashed there. The receiver never leaves the property on your dog's neck. After reliability arrives (the day 15-30 window), wean flags by pulling every other one every 4 days.

Maintenance Schedule#
Three habits keep the fence real:

The failure modes are silent: a dead battery, a wire break, a tripped breaker or GFCI shows no visible sign. The cadence is the alarm system.
Long-Term Ownership#
Wire ages on a schedule you can plan around: 20 AWG kit wire lasts 2-5+ years where it's exposed, 14 AWG HMWPE runs 20+, and quality buried wire goes 15-20 years (10-12 in heavy road-salt areas). Three or more splices in one run means replace the run.
The seasonal rhythm:
- Spring: full perimeter walk, splice audit (splices fail first), frost-heave check where wire meets concrete, width recalibrated by walk-test
- Summer: check after any digging, edging, or aeration; brief every lawn crew and flag the line first
- Fall: pre-freeze survey, conduit over exposed runs, corroded splices replaced with gel capsules, route photos refreshed
- Winter: daily transmitter-light glance; batteries every 6 weeks; 12-18 inches of packed snow lifts the dog above the field, so raise the width for the season and retest standing on the snow; keep piles off the line and flag crossings for the plow

Aeration gets its own rule: one pass can nick the wire in multiple places, and cascading nick repairs run $135+ per trip. Flag the line before the crew arrives, every time. If a break beats you anyway, wire-break locate and repair (our store) handles it.
Once a year, or any time a neighboring house gets a dog, walk the shared property line with collar and test light; conflicts routinely appear years after a clean install.
One honest product note: app-connected wired systems with break and battery push alerts exist, but only through pro-install dealers. The DIY substitute is knowing the alarm pattern (a beep every second means a full break) plus the monthly walk. A surge-protected transmitter lasts 10+ years; plan a full system refresh at 10-15.
If a Neighbor Has a Dog Fence#
Your collar is a passive receiver tuned to one carrier: it fires at any wire radiating that carrier, theirs as readily as yours. And two loops running close and parallel distort or partially cancel each other, even across brands.
The symptom signature is collar-side only: false beeps or corrections concentrated along the shared line, a beep line that wanders on that leg between walk-tests, or activations in "safe" areas, all while your transmitter's loop light stays green and no break alarm sounds.
Confirm it in three steps:
- Unplug your transmitter and pull its battery backup. If the collar still activates along the line, the signal is coming from outside.
- Coordinate a power-off: the neighbor unplugs while you walk the shared leg with collar and test light at neck height, in both directions.
- Sweep the basement cable and phone drops with the receiver. A fence signal can ride a shared cable between houses, which changes the fix to rerouting away from the drop, not the lot line.
The fix ladder, ranked:
- Separate the two wires to 10 feet
- Reroute your shared leg inboard, which is deterministic and needs no cooperation
- Switch frequency on whichever system supports it. One DIY brand has an owner toggle; after switching, re-sync every collar and walk-test each one, or range silently collapses. Fixed-frequency brands route through Customer Care.
- Trim boundary width on that leg, but never below the 6-10 feet-per-side run-through floor
There is no referee. These are unlicensed low-power devices, so no regulator will intervene. Engineering fixes are the only fixes, plus one friendly ask: "your collar is correcting my dog on my property" costs the neighbor nothing but a dial turn.
Stop condition: a neighbor-triggered correction is unpredictable and un-retreatable, exactly the kind shown to elevate stress in dogs. At the first confirmed false activation, collar off and leash supervision until it's fixed; then re-run a short flag review on that leg so the boundary predicts cleanly again.
Walks run on the same physics: a same-frequency front-yard loop can legally sit 10 feet from the road with a field reaching the sidewalk, one more reason the receiver comes off at your fixed exit spot before every walk.
Know the Limits#
The boundary keeps nothing out (strays, coyotes, delivery drivers), and your dog may hesitate to retreat past its own wire. The escape data is plain, too: in a 2017 JAVMA study of 974 owners, 44% of dogs using electronic containment escaped at least once in their lifetime, and vendor "99%" containment claims publish no comparable methodology. The static correction is a brief, low-energy interrupt; that is a design description, not a safety assurance, and the wear-time rules above are mandatory. A sore or bald patch on the neck means stop and see a vet.
Some dogs should not be on one at all: sighthounds and high-prey-drive dogs, fearful or sound-sensitive dogs, and dogs with a bite history may be poor candidates. Use supervised or on-leash yard time and gut-check with is an underground fence right for your dog.

Do I have to bury the wire?
No. Burial protects the wire but does nothing for the signal. Stapling wire to the ground every 2-5 feet is a recognized installation method, with more exposure to mower, trimmer, foot-traffic, and weather damage.
