Any Trench Is Still Digging

1-3 Inches Is the Kit-Manual Depth, and Where It Bites#
The signal does not need soil. Your transmitter drives a radio field through the loop, and that field carries fine through a shallow cover or none at all: stapled flat on top of the ground, the fence still works. Most manufacturer manuals say to cut a trench 1 to 3 inches deep and call burial "recommended to protect it," nothing more. That depth shields the wire from mowers, string trimmers, cleats, and sun.
What it does not shield against is the ground itself. A core aerator's tines reach about 3 inches, and a lawn edger cuts 2 to 3, so a wire at kit depth sits right in their path. That is the whole case for going deeper. Test before you dig either way: run the system above ground first, set your boundary width, and only trench once the loop checks out.
Why 4-6 Inches Is the Default#

Two Places to Stay Shallow
Near the house, a wider dial setting can push the field through an exterior wall and fire the collar indoors. If that happens, reroute the run rather than over-dialing. Treat 6 inches as the ceiling. Deeper than that buys no extra protection from lawn tools, it is past every manufacturer's stated range, and it turns every future break into an excavation. Cut the Trench 4-6 Inches Deep
2-3 hoursOpen a 4 to 6 inch trench along the flag line. A flat spade does it by hand: drive the blade, rock it to widen the cut, advance one blade width, repeat. For a big yard, a rented walk-behind edger or trencher cuts deeper and far faster. Damp soil cuts easier than dry clay, so water the route the day before if the ground is baked.

Seat the Wire

Close the Seam

Aerators, Dethatchers, and Mowers#
Buried at 4 to 6 inches, the wire clears the tools that cause most breaks: core aerators (tines about 3 inches), spike aerators, and dethatchers, which only work the top inch. Reburying After a Repair#

Common Depth Questions#
Sod? Cut straight through established sod with a spade or edger. The seam knits back within 2-3 weeks of watering and mowing. Laying new sod? Pin the wire to the grade first and sod over it.
Rocky soil or tree roots? Don't force depth. Anywhere you cannot get down, sleeve the wire in PVC conduit or an old garden hose (never metal pipe) and run it on the surface, or staple that stretch and return to the trench where the soil allows.
