When Above-Ground Wins#
Choose above-ground when at least one of these is true:
- You rent. Lawn staples come out when you move. Get your landlord's written approval before laying any wire.
- The soil fights back. Rock, roots, and hardpan that make trenching miserable don't matter to a stapled wire.
- You're not sure yet. Run the loop above ground for a season before committing. Every install should be walk-tested above ground first anyway.
- You need a temporary route. Frozen ground, a future landscape project, or a trial layout can justify surface-stapling now and burying later.
Don't choose it for travel: many campgrounds and RV parks ban electronic containment, so a portable staple install is worth less on the road than it sounds.

Plan the Full-Perimeter Loop

Test Before You Fasten
Never fasten wire you haven't walk-tested. Moving a live, unfastened wire costs nothing; re-routing a fastened one costs an afternoon.
Staple the Ground Runs

Every failure on that list is silent: the collar just stops correcting, with no visible sign, and the yard is open. Hybrid Installs: Bury Only What Needs It#

Renters, HOAs, and the Fine Print#
