The honest answer: a typical suburban underground dog fence (400 to 800 feet of perimeter, one driveway crossing) takes 8 to 14 hours of actual work. That's a full weekend at a comfortable pace, or one brutal Saturday if you rent the right tool and don't stop for lunch.

1 hourMount the transmitter in the garage or basement near a grounded outlet, connect both wire ends, and power it up while the wire is still above ground. Walk the boundary with the collar. If anything is wrong, you fix it now by dragging wire, not later by digging.
Saturday, 11 AM: trench
1.5-6 hoursHand-dig a 4-6 inch trench with a flat spade at 100-150 ft/hour, or run a rented trencher at 250-400 ft/hour. Drop the wire in and press the trench closed with your boot. Saturday, 3 PM: the driveway crossing
1-2 hoursAsphalt: circular saw with a masonry blade, 1/2-inch deep cut, wire in, self-leveling asphalt sealant over the top. Concrete with an expansion joint: clean the joint, seat the wire, seal. Takes 30-45 minutes. Gravel: trench under it with the wire inside PVC conduit.
Sunday, 9 AM: splices and final testing
1-1.5 hoursMake every connection with gel-filled waterproof connectors, twist the run from boundary to transmitter tightly (10-12 twists per foot so it doesn't signal), and walk the entire perimeter with the collar before you call it buried.
Sunday, 10:30 AM: flags and cleanup
1-1.5 hoursPlace a training flag every 10 feet at the beep line, about 60 flags on a 600-foot loop. Press closed any trench slots that lifted overnight, hose off the tools, return the rental before the second-day charge kicks in.

Saturday morning: layout and transmitter mount (2-3 hours)#
Walking 600 feet of wire onto the grass sounds like a 20-minute job. It isn't. This is when you make every routing decision: distance off the sidewalk, the garden beds, where the twisted-pair run leaves the loop for the garage. Uncoil the wire the night before
Boundary wire comes off the spool with memory: it wants to coil. Unspool it Friday evening and leave it stretched in the sun for a few hours Saturday morning. Relaxed wire lays in a trench slot in one pass; coiled wire pops back out and adds 30+ minutes of fighting.
Mount the transmitter indoors, on a garage or basement wall 2-3 feet off the floor, near a grounded outlet, with a fence-rated surge module (our store) clamping both the outlet and the loop terminals. Lightning is the top killer of transmitters, and it arrives through the buried loop, which is why an ordinary power strip does nothing here. Then the test nobody wants to do: connect both ends, power up, and walk the entire boundary holding the collar at your dog's neck height. Five of the most valuable minutes of the weekend. Saturday afternoon: trenching, the real work#
Here's where the production rates live:
- Flat spade or half-moon edger, by hand: 100-150 ft/hour in normal loam. Step the blade in 4-6 inches, rock it to open a V, move 4 inches, repeat. It's not hard, it's just relentless.
- Rented wire-laying machine: 250-400 ft/hour, about $60-90 for a day at most rental yards (a bigger walk-behind trencher runs $150-250). One pass cuts a clean 4-6 inch trench. Walk the wire in behind you and heel the trench shut. A gas lawn edger runs fast but only opens a 3-inch slit, so treat it as a shortcut that trades durability for speed.
So a 600-foot loop is 4-6 hours by hand or 1.5-2.5 hours by machine. A 400-foot loop is 3-4 hours by hand, close enough to a long afternoon that plenty of people skip the rental and save the cash. At 800 feet, hand-digging is 5.5-8 hours and the rental stops being optional for most backs.
Target depth is 4-6 inches, the depth pro crews use. It clears the core aerators, spike aerators, and dethatchers that cause most wire breaks. The kit manual quotes 1-3 inches, and the wire performs identically that shallow, but at that depth it sits within reach of aerators and edgers and breaks more over time, so 1-3 is only safe if you flag and avoid the line before you aerate. Six inches is the ceiling for a lawn: deeper adds no protection and only makes future repairs harder. Depth doesn't change the correction in that range. The field is set by the boundary-width dial and the flag walk-test, not by how deep the wire sits, so after burying you re-walk the boundary and nudge the dial only if the beep line moved. Call 811 before any of this
Schedule the free 811 utility locate 2-3 full business days before your dig weekend. The notice period varies by state, and the 811 guide has the details for yours. Gas, electric, and cable lines get marked at no cost (private lines like irrigation are yours to find). Even a shallow trench is exactly deep enough to find a cable drop the hard way, and a severed line costs more than the entire fence.
One scheduling trick that costs nothing: dig 24-48 hours after a good rain, or run the sprinklers hard Friday night. Moist soil cuts at nearly double the rate of baked summer clay.
The driveway crossing (1-2 hours)#

Asphalt: circular saw with a $10-15 masonry blade, score a 1/2-inch-deep line across, vacuum the slot, press the wire in, fill with an asphalt-rated self-leveling sealant ($10-25 a tube). Match the sealant to the surface. The cutting itself takes 20 minutes; the rest of the 1-2 hour budget is setup and cleanup.
Concrete with expansion joints: the easy win. Clean out a joint with a screwdriver and shop vac, seat the wire at the bottom, seal over it. 30-45 minutes, no saw rental.
Concrete without a usable joint: rent a concrete saw ($80+/day), reroute to cross at a gravel apron, or have a pro do just this section. Plenty of smart DIYers do.
Gravel: trench 3-4 inches under it with the wire inside 1/2-inch PVC conduit ($5-15 for 10 feet) so the next regrading or snow-plow pass doesn't snag bare wire.
Sunday: splices, testing, and flags (2-3 hours)#
Sunday is detail work, and the details are what decide whether this system still works in year three.
Every splice gets the full treatment: wire nut seated inside a sealed gel capsule, a strain-relief knot tied into the wires so ground movement can't tug the joint apart, and a note of where it lives for future troubleshooting. A bare wire nut on its own corrodes underground in 6-18 months. A 10-pack of gel capsules runs $15-30 and a typical install uses 2-4. Then the final walk: collar held at your dog's neck height, full perimeter, checking that the warning tone fires at a consistent distance. Set the boundary width by walk-testing, not by the dial. The transmitter knob is signal strength, not feet. Only after the walk test passes do you press every trench slot fully closed.
Flags go in every 10 feet, centered on where the warning tone starts, not on the wire itself. They're the visual language your dog learns over the next two weeks.

What blows up the schedule#
Three things stretch a 10-hour weekend into 16-plus:
Tree roots. Mature maples and oaks push surface roots exactly where you want a trench. Expect your hand rate to drop to 50-75 ft/hour in root zones, and plan to route around drip lines instead of through them where the layout allows. A wooded back line can add 2-3 hours by itself.
Rocky or glacial soil. If your shovel rings instead of slices, an edger helps less than you'd hope: rental blades skip off fist-sized rock. Budget double the hand-dig time, or look hard at the hire-it-out math below.
Long perimeters. Time scales with footage and so does fatigue. A full acre is about 835 feet if it's square; two acres is roughly 1,180. Past 800 feet, plan on two weekends, or one weekend with a machine and a helper. Run your actual lot through the wire calculator before buying anything.
