Driveway and Sidewalk Crossings: PVC Conduit vs Saw-Cutting
Three ways to run boundary wire across a driveway or sidewalk: an existing expansion joint, PVC conduit, or a half-inch saw kerf, plus slack and splice rules.

- Gel-filled splice capsule (only if the crossing needs a splice)
Every layout we publish encircles the entire house (see the layout patterns guide), so your loop will cross the driveway or a walkway at least once. That is normal, and there are three ways to do it. Cheapest first: lay the wire in an existing expansion joint, sleeve it under gravel or soil, or saw a shallow kerf in the pavement. Laying wire on the surface is fine only as a short-term test of the loop before you commit to a crossing method, never as the finished install.

Pick the crossing method#

Method zero: use an expansion joint#
If an expansion or control joint lines up anywhere near your planned line, you cut nothing. Scrape the joint clean of old filler and debris, press the wire below the surface, and caulk over it. Manufacturers list this as the first option because it takes minutes and leaves the slab untouched. Jogging the boundary a few feet to reach a joint is almost always worth it. Keep the reroute corners gradual, 3 ft radius minimum.
Conduit method (gravel, dirt, or pre-pour)#

On gravel or dirt, trench below the base (deep enough that regrading and compaction can't reach the sleeve), lay the sleeve, feed the wire, and re-grade. PVC pipe or an old garden hose both work; the sleeve is abrasion armor, not signal shielding. Never use metal pipe, since metal interferes with the signal.
Under existing pavement, conduit only works where you can push it from a lawn-edge trench: practical under ~10 ft, saw-cut beyond that. Feed the wire with fish tape, coil 2-3 ft of slack at each end in a small pit, and backfill with sand. Slack matters: buried wire contracts in the cold, and a taut run fails at the first hard freeze.
Saw-cut method (existing concrete or asphalt)#
A circular saw with a masonry blade (under $5 for the blade as of mid-2026) makes the whole cut. You don't need a rented walk-behind saw for one or two crossings; rental yards carry them for long multi-crossing asphalt jobs. The cut kicks up silica dust: wear a respirator and have a helper mist the blade.

Mark the crossing line
10 minChalk or string line, perpendicular to the driveway. Angled crossings add length and add points where the wire can be damaged. Take the shortest path across.
Cut the kerf
20-30 minOne pass, about 1/2 in deep, one blade width wide. That's the manufacturer spec, and a single wire seats fine in it. Widen the cut only if a twisted pair is crossing here.
Deepen the cut where the pavement meets the lawn. Plow blades and edgers hit that transition first.
Clean the slot
10 minVacuum or brush out all dust and debris. Anything left in the kerf keeps the caulk from bonding and opens a path for water.
Lay the wire
15 minPress the wire to the bottom of the kerf with a wooden dowel or the flat of a putty knife, nothing that can nick the insulation. Coil 2-3 ft of slack at each end in a small pit at the pavement edge.
Seal the kerf
20-30 minMatch the caulk to the surface: silicone or concrete caulk on concrete, asphalt caulk on blacktop. Caulk needs above-freezing temperatures to cure.
Finish flush
Tool the bead flush or a hair below grade. A proud bead gets caught by plows, mowers, and shovel edges, then peels out within a season.
Test before backfilling
15 minConnect the loop to the transmitter and walk the crossing with the test light. If the loop reads broken, the crossing wire is the first suspect: pull it and inspect for nicks now, while the pits are open. If the crossing checks out, work through the troubleshooter on the rest of the loop.
Slack pits and splices#
Every crossing gets 4-6 ft of slack: 2-3 ft coiled at each end in a small pit at the pavement edge, buried 1-3 in deep. The slack absorbs thermal contraction, gives you wire to pull for future repairs, and rides out decades of driveway settlement.
If the crossing has to join existing wire, splice in the slack pit, never inside the slot. Wire nut with no exposed copper, a strain-relief knot, sealed in a gel-filled splice capsule (our store), and write down the location: most boundary-wire breaks occur at splices.
Twisted-pair crossings#
If the driveway sits between your transmitter and the loop, the twisted-pair run crosses it too. Both wires fit through 1/2 in conduit; in a kerf, widen the cut slightly so both seat at the bottom. Everything else (slack, sealing, testing) is identical.
Common failures#
How crossings fail
- Surface-laid wire under tape or patches: cut within a season by shovels, mowers, or tires
- Sealant proud of the surface: peels out, then water gets in
- No slack pits: taut wire snaps at the kerf edge on the first hard freeze
- Splice inside the slot: belongs in the slack pit, inside a gel capsule
- Wire floating mid-kerf: works loose under traffic; press it to the bottom before sealing

When to hire it out#
- More than two crossings
- Long asphalt runs, where heat and dust make handheld cuts brutal
- Decorative or stamped concrete, where a bad cut is permanent
