Wire Repair: How to Splice a Broken Boundary Wire
Find a boundary wire break free or with a rented locator, then splice it the manual way (wire nut, strain-relief knot, gel capsule) so it lasts 15-20 years.

A full wire break drops your fence to zero protection. On most transmitters the tell is a beep every second. The repair takes 1-2 hours, and a splice made the manual way lasts the life of the wire: 15-20 years. A bad one has you digging again next spring.

The Splice That Lasts
Bare wire nuts, electrical tape, and crimp-only connectors all fail underground. The manual method is a wire nut with no exposed copper, sealed completely inside a gel-filled waterproof capsule.

Confirm and Locate the Break
30-60 minConfirm before you hunt. Unhook both loop ends from the transmitter and put a multimeter across them: a healthy loop reads about 10 ohms per 1,000 feet of 20 AWG wire. No reading at all means a full break, the same thing a once-per-second transmitter beep is telling you.
Two free locating passes before you rent anything:
- Divide method: disconnect the loop at a rough midpoint (an old splice is ideal) and close each half into its own small loop at the transmitter with a jumper wire. The half that still trips the break alarm holds the break. Keep halving.
- AM radio: tune near 530-600 kHz and walk directly over the wire; the static fades past the break. It needs the transmitter still driving the broken loop, which not every unit will do, and some brands don't register on AM.
If both fail, rent a locator ($30-60 per day as of mid-2026) or use our Locate & Repair kit (our store), which is yours to keep. Hookup order matters: power off the transmitter, disconnect both wire ends, connect the locator's own signal generator to one end and push its ground stake into bare soil. Walk the line. The tone drops at the break. Mark the spot with tape or a flag.
Breaks cluster at: the wire's exit from the house, old splices, driveway and plow edges, bed-edging lines, freshly aerated or dug ground, and rodent chews.
Locators and the AM trick only find full breaks. If the fence cuts out intermittently instead of dying, the fault is usually a corroded splice. Start with signal troubleshooting.
Expose the Wire
15 minDig a 6-8 inch wide trench centered on the mark, down to wire depth: usually 1-3 inches on a kit-manual install, up to 4-6 inches on a pro-depth run. Work with a flat shovel to avoid cutting more wire. Pull about 8 inches of wire up on each side for working room.
On a surface-stapled above-ground run, skip the digging. Just position the finished capsule out of mower, trimmer, and foot-traffic reach.
Strip and Inspect
5 minCut off all damaged or corroded copper. Strip fresh insulation to your connector's spec, usually 3/8 to 1/2 inch. The copper underneath should be bright and shiny.
Green or black past an inch from the break? Keep cutting. Corroded copper is high-resistance copper. Splicing it in is a slow leak.
Splice
10 min- Twist the ends together under a wire nut sized for your gauge, with no copper showing outside the nut.
- Tie both wires in a loose strain-relief knot 3-4 inches from the nut, so a tug loads the knot, not the joint.
- Push the nut all the way into a gel-filled capsule until gel surrounds it, and snap it shut.
- Pull-test the joint.
Ends won't reach after trimming? Bridge the gap: a length of matching-gauge wire, two capsules, and an S-curve of slack. Never pull buried wire taut.
Record every splice on your yard map. The manuals warn that most boundary wire breaks occur at splices. Next break, you check those spots first.
Test, Then Bury
15 minReconnect the loop to the transmitter. The break alarm should stop and the loop light hold steady. Color varies by brand. Clip the test light across the collar's contact points and walk the repaired section at dog-neck height to confirm the warning fires.
Only after the test passes, rebury the capsule to the run's depth and tamp the soil firmly. If that run sat shallow at 1-3 inches and the break came from aeration or edging, reset the splice toward the 4-6 inch pro depth while you have it open.
A repaired loop can fail again with no visible sign. Walk the boundary with the test light monthly. Two defenses keep the next break away, and both are worth doing: rebury toward the 4-6 inch pro depth where the soil allows, and flag the wire line before any aerating, dethatching, or edging.
Breaks You Handle Differently#
Under a driveway or sidewalk. Don't tunnel after it. Re-cut the kerf about 1/2 inch deep beside the old cut, lay fresh wire, and seal. Or reroute through an expansion joint. Both methods are in the driveway and sidewalk crossings guide.
In a twisted-pair run. Treat twisted pair as two separate repairs: splice both conductors, one gel capsule each.
When to Replace Instead of Splice#
Splice once or twice in a stretch. At 3+ breaks in 20 feet (an aerator pass, edger line, or rodent run), pull the section and lay new wire with just two splices at the ends.
