Buried boundary wire outlasts the electronics that drive it: an intact, buried run is good for 15-20 years, while a surge-protected transmitter averages 10+ years and collars die sooner still. So when an old system quits (or the brand behind it does), the first move is a free wire test, not a new kit. This guide walks the whole swap: prove the old loop is alive, pick a transmitter that matches it, wire it in, and run your dog through a short refresher.
Orphaned-brand owners, this includes you. Your brand may be discontinued and aftermarket-only, but the wire it left in your yard works with any current transmitter. Keep the wire and the layout; replace the box and the collar.
Test the Old Loop Before You Buy Anything#
The decision rule: a live loop with a dead box means a transmitter swap (this guide); a dead loop with a live box means a wire repair, not a new system. A transmitter beeping every second is telling you the second thing: that's the full-break alarm, and no new box fixes broken wire. Not sure which failure you have? Disconnect both lead-in wires from the old transmitter and put a multimeter on ohms across them. Healthy 20 AWG loop wire reads about 10 ohms per 1,000 feet, so a 1,500-foot loop lands in the low teens. Estimate your footage with the wire calculator before you read the meter.

A failed continuity test means money spent on a new transmitter is wasted until the break is fixed. One honest limit of this test: continuity proves the loop is whole today, not that it will stay whole. A corroded splice from the original install can pass in July and fail after the first freeze. If the old system had a history of intermittent faults, budget for the possibility of a partial rewire even on a passing loop.

Fix a Backyard-Only Loop Now
Some legacy installs (a pattern a few competitors still publish) loop only the backyard, leaving the house outside the boundary. Reject it: a dog that slips out the front door is already past the wire, wearing a live collar, with no safe way back. Extend the loop to encircle the entire house during the swap; wire crossing the driveway is normal. Compare shapes in layout patterns and sketch the extension in the fence planner.
Choosing the Replacement System#
Match loop length to the transmitter rating. Maximum loop length is a transmitter spec, not a wire-gauge spec. The gauge-based capacity tables some retailers publish are heuristics, not manual numbers. One mainstream transmitter is rated to 8,600 feet of 20 AWG loop (about 100 acres); another classic unit sets its range switch by loop length, with steps at 1,300 and 2,400 feet. Check the manual of the unit you're buying against your real footage, and remember twisted-pair footage counts double against capacity.
Expect a frequency change. Different brands signal on different frequencies, which is exactly why old collars almost never pair with a new box. It also matters at property lines: keep your loop 10 feet from a neighbor's where possible, never under 5, and note that some brands offer user-selectable frequencies if collars still chirp.
Shop for Run-Through Protection
Many systems correct again on re-entry, stranding a dog that pushed through on the wrong side of its own fence. Outbound-only correction, sold as run-through protection, is one of the first specs to check on the new transmitter. And if your dog ever does get out: deactivate the system or remove the collar, lure them back in, and never punish the return.

Photograph and Label Before You Disconnect

Bench-Test the New Transmitter on a Short Loop
15 minBefore the buried loop touches the new box, connect a short scrap loop of wire (a few feet joined end to end) and confirm the loop light comes on, the collar beeps at the wire, and the test light fires across the contact points. This separates "new unit is defective" from "my old wire has a problem" before you've mixed the two.
Connect the Old Loop and Refresh the Lead-In
30 minCut the old lead-in ends back to clean, bright copper before landing them on the new terminals. Power Up Behind a Surge Protector

Walk-Test and Recalibrate the Width From Scratch
30-45 minOld dial numbers mean nothing on the new box. Dials set signal strength, not feet, and every brand scales differently. Walk toward the wire holding the collar at your dog's neck height with the test light clipped across the contacts. Target 12-24 feet of total boundary width and plant a flag every 10 feet at the new beep line, even where the old flags stood.
Your dog never wears the collar during testing. Carry it at neck height by hand. Full calibration detail is in setting boundary width and testing.
The new box fails exactly as silently as the old one did, and it still keeps nothing out of the yard. Carry the maintenance habits over on day one: test the collar weekly, walk the boundary with the test light monthly, and change collar batteries on a fixed 3-month schedule.
Retraining an Experienced Dog#
A fence-experienced dog gets the full sequence, not a pass: flags at the new beep line, leashed sessions, and progression gated on behavior. Manufacturers apply the same rule to moving house: full retrain at any new boundary. The difference is pace: experienced dogs usually blitz it in days rather than weeks, because the gates are behavior, not calendar. Run three 10-15 minute sessions a day, start at week one flag introduction, and progress through the boundary training guide. Treat the system as genuinely new to your dog, since warning tones and correction feel differ between brands. Relocating entirely? Same logic, longer runway: see moving with your dog fence. A dog that has never used a fence gets no shortcut. Plan the full 14+ day protocol and about 4 weeks before unsupervised yard access.
Mixed Gauges, Partial Rewires, and Second Dogs#
Mixed gauges in one loop work. The loop is one continuous circuit, and the signal doesn't care where 20 AWG meets 14 AWG. The junction splice is the weak point: gel capsule, strain-relief knot, recorded location. If you're buying wire anyway, 14 AWG carries about 4x the copper of 20 AWG and is the durability upgrade.
Partial rewires are routine. Cut out the damaged section and splice new boundary wire (our store) in at both ends. That makes two capsuled, recorded splices.
