A standard in-ground transmitter is rated for around 8,600 feet of loop (roughly 100 acres) on the 20 AWG wire that ships in the kit. Acreage limits are set by the transmitter on the wall, not the wire in the ground. Capacity Is a Transmitter Rating, Not a Gauge Limit#
Every transmitter quotes a maximum loop length, and that number is the spec that matters:
- Range/mode switch: many in-ground transmitters split range by loop length. The low-to-high crossover falls somewhere around 2,800 to 4,400 feet depending on the model, and above it the high setting reaches about 8,600 feet (roughly 100 acres) on the highest-capacity units. Consumer models are commonly marketed to about 25 acres. Check your unit's manual for the exact crossover, not a forum thread.
The gauge-to-acreage tables on retail sites are heuristics, not manufacturer specs. The manuals quote those maximums on ordinary 20 AWG kit wire. Pick the transmitter for your loop length first. Pick wire gauge second, for a different reason entirely.

These are approximations. Irregular boundaries and exclusion zones around pools and gardens add footage, so buy 10-15% slack on top of what the wire calculator returns. The layout rules don't relax at scale: one continuous loop that encircles the entire house (your dog exits any door into contained space), corners rounded to a 3-foot minimum radius, and wire at least 10 feet from the road. Gauge Buys Durability, Not Distance#
Kits ship 20 AWG solid-core wire rated for direct burial, and the transmitter ratings above are quoted on it, so 20 AWG is not costing you range. What heavier boundary wire (our store) buys on acreage is survival: 14 AWG carries about 4 times the copper of 20 AWG, and professional installers run 14 or 16 AWG with thick jackets because field wire takes hits you never see. Frost heave, rodents, equipment. Figure about $65 per 500-ft roll at the mid-grade as of mid-2026, with bulk spools cheaper per foot.

Depth doesn't change with acreage: bury 4-6 inches, the depth pro crews use so aerators and dethatchers can't reach the wire. Kit manuals allow 1-3 inches, and burial protects the wire rather than carrying the signal, but shallow wire sits within reach of lawn tools and breaks more over time. The correction field is set by the boundary-width dial, not how deep you bury (how deep to bury dog fence wire). What changes is the tool:
- Lawn edger (manual or power): the quick option through about 2 acres, roughly 1,180 feet of slit at the manufacturer baseline, but an edger only reaches the shallow 1-3 inch kit-manual depth, so follow behind with a flat spade for the recommended 4-6 inches or flag and avoid the line before aerating. No maker publishes a per-day rate for edgers, and the tool only cuts the slit (wire goes in by hand behind it), so expect less footage per day than the trencher below.
- Compact walk-behind mini-trencher (Kwik-Trench class): the right rental from 2 acres up, at $150-250 per day as of mid-2026. For rocky or root-bound stretches, don't fight the ground: staple the wire to the surface every 2-5 feet, a recognized method covered in above-ground installation. Hybrid loops are normal: trench the open field, staple the difficult tree line.
811 Marks Nothing Past the Meter
The free 811 locate (2-3 full business days' notice, varies by state) marks only utility-owned lines, typically up to your meter. Power to the barn, irrigation, propane runs, and septic are private and stay unmarked; private locating runs about $150-500 per lot as of mid-2026. On a farm, most of the buried hazards are yours.
Long Home Runs, Farm Drives, and Water#
On big parcels the transmitter often sits hundreds of feet from the boundary, in a barn or garage well inside the loop. That connection is a twisted-pair (our store) home run: 10-12 twists per foot cancels the signal so your dog crosses that line freely, and the twisted section splices between two single-wire sections, never into the middle of one run. Twisted Footage Counts Double
Twisted runs count twice against the transmitter's rated capacity, and manufacturers cap them at half the total loop length. A 500-ft home run to a back-field loop consumes 1,000 feet of an 8,600-ft rating, so budget for it before you site the transmitter.
Crossings work the same way they do in town (driveway and sidewalk crossings): kerf paved drives about 1/2 inch deep and seal, and sleeve gravel or dirt drives (and gate openings) in PVC conduit or an old garden hose. Never metal pipe; it interferes with the signal. A creek or boggy stretch is the same job: sleeve the crossing in PVC conduit and anchor it so moving water can't shift it. Water has no manufacturer setback number. The rule is width-based. Set the boundary width so the correction field stops short of the bank, or deliberately run wire into a pond as a swim limit, a dealer-documented pattern. Skip in-water loops on shores with surf or tide.
Break Strategy for Rural Loops#
A 3,000-foot loop breaks the same way a 600-foot loop does. It just takes longer to find the break. Stack the odds at install time: record every splice location, photograph the route against landmarks before grass closes over it, and splice only the manual way (wire nut with no exposed copper, strain-relief knot 3-4 inches back, sealed in a gel capsule from an accessory pack (our store)). Breaks cluster at splices, house exits, drive edges, and anywhere later dug, aerated, or chewed.
When the transmitter starts beeping every second (the full-break alarm), locate cheapest-first. The divide method (disconnect at a midpoint splice and halve the loop by watching the loop light) was built for long loops. An AM radio tuned near 530-600 kHz and walked over the wire works on many systems: static fades past the break. The loop must stay energized, though, and some brands are inaudible. What Wire Won't Do on Acreage#
The boundary keeps nothing out. Coyotes, strays, and people can cross it freely, and your dog may hesitate to retreat past its own wire. On rural land with real predator pressure, the system is a containment tool, not overnight protection; small dogs especially stay supervised.
Failures are silent, and footage multiplies the blind spots: a dead collar battery, a break under the back field, or a tripped breaker leaves zero protection with no visible sign. Keep the cadence: collar test weekly, battery swap every 3 months, boundary walk with the test light monthly. When GPS Genuinely Wins#
Wired isn't always the answer. Choose a GPS collar fence when you have 3+ acres and no appetite for trenching, when the boundary needs to move (leases, rotational grazing, a second property), or when escape tracking matters more than a fixed line. Those are real wins: unlimited boundary size, zero digging, portability.
