Layout Patterns: Full Loops and Split-Zone Designs
Full-loop and split-zone underground fence layouts: how to pick by yard shape, plan exclusion islands, and keep the whole house inside the loop.

Two patterns cover nearly every residential lot, and one rule overrides both: the boundary loop encircles the entire house, every time. Pick the wrong pattern and you're back in the trench, adding the zone you forgot.
The house always sits inside the loop
Every layout on this page keeps the whole house inside contained space, so your dog can exit any door (front, back, garage) without crossing a correction line. Wire crossing the driveway is normal and expected; the crossings guide covers the method.
One limit up front: a layout only controls where your dog stops. It keeps nothing out. Strays, wildlife, and people cross the wire freely, so no pattern replaces supervision.
Pattern 1: Full Loop (single zone)#
A single continuous wire follows the property perimeter back to itself, with one twisted-pair run connecting the transmitter to the loop. This is the pattern kit manuals assume.
Best for:
- Standalone single-family lots of any size the transmitter can drive
- Dogs that should have front, back, and side yard access
Capacity is a transmitter rating, not an acreage rule: a standard in-ground transmitter is rated for around 8,600 feet of loop (roughly 100 acres) on the 20 AWG wire that ships in the kit. Past about 5 acres the constraint is trenching effort, not signal; see the large-property guide.
How it routes: twisted pair from transmitter → out to the perimeter → around the entire property, house inside → back to the starting point → twisted pair home.
Full-loop sizing
Manufacturer square-lot figures: 1/4 acre ≈ 415 ft of wire, 1/2 acre ≈ 590 ft, 1 acre ≈ 835 ft. Add ~20% for curves, detours, and slack at crossings, so a 500-ft roll covers up to ~1/4 acre (a 1/3-acre perimeter already runs ~480 ft bare), and 1,000 ft handles up to ~1 acre. Coming up short mid-install forces a splice you didn't need, and splices are where most wire breaks happen later. Round up to the next roll of boundary wire (our store).
Common mistake: "saving wire" by cutting across the yard. The wire creates a boundary wherever it's laid, so a diagonal shortcut splits the yard in half with a correction line your dog can't cross.
Pattern 2: Split-Zone (perimeter loop + exclusion islands)#
A split-zone layout is the full loop plus interior keep-out islands: one perimeter loop around the entire property (house included) plus a separate exclusion loop around the pool, garden, or beds, joined by twisted pair. The dog crosses the twisted run freely but can't enter the island.
Best for:
- Pools and ponds inside the yard
- Vegetable gardens and landscape beds
- Septic fields, play sets, anything the dog should skip
How it routes: two twisted runs. Run 1 connects the transmitter to the perimeter loop. Run 2 splices into the perimeter loop and carries the signal to the interior exclusion loop. Full wiring detail is in the exclusion-zones guide.
Restricting the front yard is not a split-zone job. Keep one loop and pull the front leg in to an 8-10 ft buffer off the front wall. The dog still exits the front door into contained space, and the rest of the front yard is off-limits. See "Want a backyard-only fence?" below.
Split-zone planning rule
The connecting runs must be tightly twisted (10-12 twists per foot), or they become a third active boundary in the middle of the dog's path, and the layout feels "broken" to the dog. Method and length limits in the twisted-pair guide.
Want a backyard-only fence?#
Competitor planning pages, including one national professional-install brand, publish "backyard-only" and "hourglass" layouts. Backyard-only runs wire across the face of the house, cutting the house and front yard out of the contained area. Hourglass variants pinch the loop tight along the side walls. We publish neither.
The failure mode is the door dash. With wire across the front of the house, every front-facing door opens directly onto the correction line: the dog either takes a correction in its own doorway or bolts into uncontained space. Some systems then correct it again on re-entry, stranding it outside. Hourglass pinches correct the dog for walking around its own house.
The compliant version is one full loop with the front leg pulled in to an 8-10 ft buffer off the front wall. The dog exits any door into contained space; the front yard beyond the buffer is off-limits.
Backyard-heavy done right: the loop still encircles the house. The front leg just runs close.
Road setback: where the front leg parallels a street, manufacturers publish a 10-ft minimum from the road. Treat that as the floor. A running dog covers 25+ ft per second, so add your correction-field width plus stopping room, and pull the leg back farther wherever the lot allows.
Hybrid layouts#
Odd lots combine full-perimeter routing with one or more exclusion islands. More examples by lot shape are in layouts for every yard shape. Two rules survive every combination: the system forms one electrical loop back to the transmitter, and the house stays inside contained space.
One routing tool for tight pass-throughs: where the loop must cross a breezeway, patio-door zone, or gate the dog should walk through freely, run the wire up a downspout, along the gutter line, and back down the next downspout. The vertical separation lifts the field well above the dog's neck, leaving an uncorrected corridor at ground level. It completes a whole-house loop past an obstacle, never an excuse to carve the house or a door out of the boundary.

Five layout choices that come back to bite people#

Two transmitters running two independent loops. The failure isn't the transmitters, it's the wires: wherever the two loops run within about 5 ft of each other, the signals interfere and collars chirp or correct inconsistently. One transmitter driving one loop, with exclusion islands as needed, is more reliable.

Sharp 90° corners. Round every corner to a minimum 3-ft radius; sharper turns create boundary gaps the dog can learn to find.

Wire near large metal structures. Metal sheds, buried utilities, rebar, and long metal edges can distort the field along parallel runs. Walk-test the whole route and adjust the boundary setting if the collar chirps in unexpected spots; move the wire farther away when the field remains uneven.

Your loop within 5 ft of a neighbor's. Keep 10 ft of separation when possible, never under 5. If collars still chirp, some systems offer user-selectable frequencies; others change frequency through the manufacturer's customer-care line rather than a DIY switch.

Long parallels with buried utilities. Wire running within 5 ft of electrical, phone, TV, or satellite lines picks up inconsistent signal. Cross utilities at 90° instead of running alongside them.
When a pro layout pays for itself#
Consider a professional design when your property has:
- Multiple driveway or sidewalk crossings
- More than about 5 acres of trenching
- Multiple exclusion islands (pool plus septic plus garden)
- Slopes steep enough to fight a trencher (erosion later exposes shallow wire, and downhill legs need a wider boundary width to stop a dog carrying momentum)
- Multiple dogs with different yard-access needs
- Townhome or shared-yard configurations

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my property is irregular, with odd angles, peninsulas, or big setbacks?
Wire follows any lot shape. Keep every corner to at least a 3-ft radius. Sharper turns create boundary gaps. Trace the route in the free fence planner and adjust until the dog keeps usable space without pinch points.
Can I leave a section of the yard 'outside' the boundary intentionally?
Yes, for pools, gardens, and beds. Run an interior exclusion loop connected to the perimeter loop by twisted pair; the dog crosses the twisted run freely but can't enter the island. Never carve the house itself out of the loop. The dog must be able to exit every door into contained space.
How small can a usable boundary area be?
Plan corridors and narrow sections at 20 ft or wider. Your own parallel wire runs need at least 5 ft of separation, and each wire projects a correction field several feet into the corridor. Much below 20 ft, the fields converge and the space can correct wall-to-wall; have a qualified underground-fence professional validate tight layouts before installing.
Do I need a complete loop, or can I leave one side open?
Every in-ground system needs a complete electrical loop back to the transmitter. For a normal residential installation, use a full perimeter loop that keeps the entire house inside contained space. Twisted pair carries the signal to the loop without creating a correction zone along that connecting run.
Can I run wire over my neighbor's property?
Only with their explicit written permission. Otherwise keep the wire fully inside your own lot line. If the neighbor runs their own system, keep the two loops 10 ft apart where possible and never under 5 ft; if collars still chirp, some brands offer alternate operating frequencies.
