Set your boundary to a 12-24 foot total detection field, and set it with a walk-test: the dial on your transmitter measures signal strength, not feet. Why the Dial Is Not Feet#

The same dial setting produces different widths in different yards. Soil moisture and nearby metal both change how far the signal reaches. Both major manuals say some version of "every yard is different." Burial depth is not on that list: anywhere in the normal 1-6 inch range, depth does not change the field, so set the width by walk-test regardless of how deep the wire sits (see how deep to bury dog fence wire). After you bury the wire, re-walk the beep line and nudge the dial only if it moved.

So never copy a dial number from a forum, a neighbor, or your last house. The number that matters is the one your tape measure reads at the beep line.

The dial is signal strength, not feet. Turning the dial grows the field, which surrounds the wire and reaches bothdirections. Start narrow, then widen until a walk-test at your dog's neck height puts the beep line where you want it, aiming for 12-24 ft of total width. Your dog learns that the tone means turn back.

The Target: 12-24 Feet Total#

Manufacturer guidance clusters at 12-24 feet total: some recommend 12-20 feet and say go as wide as possible, others 16-24 feet (8-12 feet per side). Aim for the widest field your yard can absorb.

Width matters because the field splits roughly 20% warning zone and 80% correction zone. The warning zone is where training happens: the tone that lets your dog stop, turn, and get rewarded for retreating. Narrow the field and the warning zone shrinks to almost nothing at running speed. That is why run-through prevention calls for 6-10+ feet per side, and why 3-5 feet per side is a small-yard floor, not a recommendation.

Set a Starting Width

Power the transmitter, confirm the loop indicator light, and set the width dial near the middle of its range. It is only a starting guess. You will correct it against a tape measure, not the dial markings.

Prep the Collar and Test Light

Put a fresh battery in the receiver and clip the test light across both contact points so it flashes the moment the collar fires.

Never on the Dog

Your dog never wears the collar during installation or testing. Carry it by hand at neck height, and keep the dog indoors until every flag is planted.

Walk to the Beep Line

10-15 min

Hold the collar at your dog's neck height. The field is measured where the dog's neck is, not at your waist. Walk from mid-yard straight toward the wire until the collar tones, then measure from that spot to the wire.

Adjust and repeat:

  • Under 6 feet per side: turn the dial up and walk it again
  • Over 12 feet per side: turn it down, because you are burning yard and inviting indoor leakage
  • Re-check at several points around the loop, especially near chain-link and buried utility runs

Flag the Beep Line

15-20 min

Plant a flag every 10 feet at the beep line, where the collar tones, not where the wire sits. The flags are what your dog learns in week one of training, so their accuracy matters more than their looks. Skip the twisted return run; its signal cancels and the dog crosses it freely.

Verify the Odd Spots and Record the Setting

Walk the beep line again at the driveway crossing, along any metal fence, and near buried utility parallels. These spots read differently from open lawn. Then carry the collar indoors along the exterior walls to check for leakage (next section). Write the final dial setting and today's date on a card taped to the transmitter.

Small Yards: The Compromise Math#

Every foot of boundary width comes out of your dog's play space on both sides: usable yard = lot dimension minus twice the per-side width. A 60-foot-deep backyard with 8-12 feet per side leaves a 36-44 foot corridor. That is usually a fine trade. Take it.

Drop to 6-8 feet total only when the layout is already as generous as the lot allows and a full-width field would pinch the yard into a hallway. Know what you give up: at 3-4 feet per side, the warning zone is inches, and a fast dog covering 25+ feet per second crosses a 3-foot field in about a tenth of a second. The collar fires at full sprint with no time to turn. That makes training discipline and battery discipline carry the load the field no longer can. If no width works on paper, sketch the lot in the fence planner. It also lets you request an installation quote from a local professional installer, and tight lots are their daily work.

When the Collar Fires Inside the House#

Your loop encircles the entire house. That is the correct layout, so wire along an exterior wall is normal. But pair that run with a wide width setting and the field can leak through the wall, firing the collar in the living room. Leakage distance scales with the width setting; there is no fixed safe footage.

Three fixes, in order:

  1. Reduce the width until the indoor leakage stops, as long as you stay at or above your per-side target outside
  2. Reroute the wall run a few feet farther from the house where the lot allows
  3. Take the collar off indoors, which also serves the wear-time rule of 12 hours per day maximum

Never Fix This by Cutting the House Out

Some competitors still publish backyard-only and hourglass layouts that solve indoor leakage by excluding the house from the loop. Reject them. A dog that slips out the front door of one of those layouts is already outside its boundary, wearing a live collar, with no safe way back in.

Snow, Thaw, and the Seasonal Re-Test#

Packed snow 12-18 inches or deeper lifts your dog above the detection field, so the beep line you calibrated in October is not the beep line in January. Raise the width setting for the season, keep plow piles off the wire line, and re-test standing on the snow, holding the collar at neck height above it, exactly where the dog will stand. In freezing weather, also tighten the battery swap to every 6 weeks; cold cuts battery capacity 30-40%.

Two Re-Tests a Year Minimum

When Width Is Not the Problem#

An honest limit of this guide: a wide, well-calibrated field improves your odds, but it is rung three on the run-through ladder, not a guarantee. The ladder, in order: dead or weak battery, poor skin contact, boundary width too narrow, correction level below the dog's arousal, incomplete training.
