An exclusion zone takes one extra run of wire, two gel-capsule splices, and 3-4 hours. It keeps your dog out of the pool, the tomatoes, or the pond without touching your perimeter layout. The pattern is an interior island: a second loop around the feature, tied to the main loop by a twisted-pair run your dog crosses freely. The Pattern: An Island Inside the Perimeter#

Your perimeter loop still encircles the entire house: the dog exits any door into contained space, and nothing about an island changes that. The island is a separate ring of wire around the pool or garden, anywhere inside the perimeter. The twisted-pair run connecting the two carries current in opposite directions, so its signals cancel: the collar ignores the run, and your dog walks over it all day.

The island is a second live loop, fed by a run the dog never feels. Signal leaves the perimeter at two gel-capsule splices (the only splices in the job), flows down one conductor of the run, around the island ring, and back up the other. Twisted at 10-12 twists per foot, the run cancels: no tone, no correction, and your dog crosses it all day. The ring itself stays live, so the collar fires at the island line exactly as it does at the perimeter. Keep the ring at least 5 feet from the perimeter wire, flag its beep line every 10 feet, and the dog keeps the whole green yard while the pool stays off limits.

Signal flows from the perimeter, down one conductor of the run, around the island, and back up the other conductor. The twisted section cancels; the island ring does not, so the collar fires at the island line exactly as it does at the perimeter.

Two patterns to reject. Don't carve a notch in the perimeter to snake around the pool: a notch pulls two live boundary lines together, and your own parallel runs need 5 feet of separation, minimum. And never "solve" a poolside layout with a backyard-only loop that leaves the house outside containment (a competitor-diagram staple). Measure and Plan the Island Route

20 min

Ring the feature with gradual corners (3-foot minimum radius, same as the perimeter) and keep the island at least 5 feet from the perimeter wire and from any other island. That 5-foot figure is the floor every current manual satisfies for a system's own parallel runs. Then plan a direct path for the twisted run to the nearest point on the perimeter loop. That point is where you'll cut and splice.

Capacity check: twisted footage counts double against your transmitter's rated loop length, and one manufacturer caps twisted runs at half the total loop. A big island on a long run can hit that ceiling, so check your transmitter's rating before you buy wire.

Lay the Island and Twist the Run

Cut one length that covers the island ring plus both legs of the run, and lay it unbroken: from the splice point you picked on the perimeter, out to the feature, all the way around the ring, then back along the same path. The wire doubles back on itself, so both free ends land at the perimeter: no cut and no splice at the island end.

Twist the doubled-back run legs together at 10-12 twists per foot, working from the ring back toward the free ends. That density is what cancels the signal. Over-twisting can damage the jacket; stop when you hit the count.

Rather use pre-twisted wire (our store), or twist two separate lengths? Then the run must also splice onto the ring at the island end, so budget two extra splices and two more gel capsules beyond the pair in the materials list.

Drill method: stake the pair where it leaves the ring, chuck both free ends together in a drill, and spin slowly until you count 10-12 twists per foot.

Splice the Island Into the Perimeter

30-45 min

Cut the perimeter loop at the splice point and join one free end of the twisted run to each cut end. Those are the only two splices in the continuous method. Loop direction doesn't matter: the island works wired clockwise or counterclockwise. What does matter: the twisted section sits between two single-wire sections of the loop, never spliced into the middle of one conductor.

Splice to the manual standard, same as wire repair: strip 3/8 to 1/2 inch, cap with a wire nut leaving no exposed copper, tie a strain-relief knot 3-4 inches back, and seal each nut inside a gel-filled capsule. Record both splice locations, because most boundary-wire breaks happen at splices.

Walk-Test the Island Beep Line

Power up, confirm the loop light, and approach the island wire from every side holding the collar at your dog's neck height with the test light clipped across the contact points. Plant a flag every 10 feet at the beep line. Calibration details in setting boundary width and testing.

One Dial Rules Both Loops

The transmitter has a single width setting, so the island's beep band is exactly as wide as the perimeter's. Turning the dial down to save garden edge also narrows your perimeter, so fix the island's standoff by moving wire, not the dial.

Bury the Wire and Flag the Line

1-2 hours

Cut a 4-6 inch trench and walk the wire in. Burial is optional for signal, useful against mowers and trimmers (more on burial depth). In beds, skip the trench: tuck the wire an inch under the mulch and pin it. Around vegetable gardens, route the wire outside the tilling line, because tillers and aerators are wire killers. Where the run crosses a pool deck or path, use an expansion joint first, otherwise a half-inch kerf sealed with surface-matched caulk (crossing technique). Leave every flag up for training.

Water Edges: Setback or Swim Limit#

Decide what the water line means before you place wire: keep-out, or swim limit.

Keep-out: no manufacturer publishes a setback distance from water. The rule is width-based. Place the wire so the correction field stops short of the water's edge, confirmed by walk-test, so the dog is warned and turned on dry ground rather than corrected mid-paddle where retreat is slow.

Swim limit: the deliberate opposite. Professional installers document running boundary wire into ponds and lakes so the dog can swim the shallows but turns back before open water. This needs a waterproof receiver, plus a dried neck and a repositioned collar after every swim, because wet-neck wear is how sores start (preventing collar sores). Skip in-water loops entirely on surf or tidal shorelines: the water moves, the wire doesn't.

Pool Codes Are a Hard Stop

Pool-barrier codes require a physical barrier, typically 48 inches high. Buried wire never satisfies them, in any jurisdiction. An exclusion zone restricts your dog; it is not child-safety equipment, and it keeps nothing and no one out of the water.

Training the Island#

A new boundary means new training, even for a fence veteran. Flag the island beep line every 10 feet and run the same phased protocol you used at the perimeter: leashed approaches, retreat at the warning cue, and two to three supervised 10-15 minute sessions a day. Start from boundary training and reuse the week-one flag introduction at the island line.

A dog already trained on the perimeter usually moves through the phases quickly, but pace by behavior, and hold unsupervised access until the dog retreats at the warning every time. A dog new to the whole system needs the full sequence: 14+ days of structured work and about 4 weeks before unsupervised yard time, longer for some dogs. The correction itself is a brief static interrupt, not a force field. Keep collar wear under 12 hours a day and reposition the collar every 1-2 hours.

Islands Have Limits#

  • The band costs ground. At the 12-24 ft total boundary width the manuals recommend, the island's field claims roughly 6-12 ft on each side of its wire. Around a small garden, that ring can eat more lawn than the garden itself, so budget the loss in the fence planner before wiring.
  • It fails silently. A dead collar battery, a cut wire, or a tripped breaker kills the island line and the perimeter together, with no visible sign. Test the collar weekly, walk both loops with the test light monthly, and change the battery on a fixed 3-month schedule.
  • It only restricts your dog. Rabbits still reach the tomatoes, and nothing about the fence keeps children, strays, or wildlife away from the pool or pond. Supervision and physical barriers do jobs wire cannot.

Multiple Islands, Changes, and Removal#

More than one island works: each gets its own twisted-pair run to the perimeter. Keep every island 5+ feet from the perimeter wire and from each other, and remember the capacity rule from Step 1: twisted footage counts double, and total twisted runs stay under half the loop length.

Removing an island later takes one new splice: cut out both twisted-run splices, rejoin the perimeter cut with a single gel-capsule splice, and record its location. The disconnected island wire can stay in the ground. Walk-test the perimeter afterward before trusting it.
