Signal Troubleshooting: Why Your Fence Stopped Working

A dog fence fails in one of three places: the transmitter, the wire, or the collar. Check the transmitter first (it takes two minutes), then the wire, then the collar. Most fixes on this page finish in under an hour.

Check the Transmitter Loop Light

Read the indicator on the transmitter:

  • Solid or green (on most models, check your manual): loop is intact. Skip to Step 3.
  • Red or blinking: broken loop. Continue to Step 2, or work the wire-alarm checks in the troubleshooter one question at a time.
  • All lights off: power problem, not a wire problem. Test the outlet with another device, then check the adapter and fuse (see the symptom table below). Or run the dead-transmitter checks in order.

Most transmitters also beep on a fault: a steady once-a-second beep means a full wire break; a long-pause beep on some models means a backup-battery issue.

Inspect Wire Connections

Power off the transmitter. Pull both wires from the terminals and look for:

  • Corrosion (greenish or black buildup)
  • Copper not fully seated in the terminal
  • Insulation pushed into the terminal instead of bare wire
  • Moisture inside the terminal block

Strip 3/8-1/2 inch of fresh copper (check your manual), reconnect, and check the loop light. Loose, corroded, or wet terminals are the most common cause of a broken-loop light.

Own a multimeter? Ohm out the loop: with both ends disconnected, measure resistance across them. An open circuit confirms a break; a healthy loop reads low, roughly 10 ohms per 1,000 feet of 20 AWG wire. Continuity confirms or clears the wire, but it cannot tell you where the break is.

Test the Collar

Take the collar off the dog for every test. Clip the test light across the collar's contact points and carry it at dog-neck height toward the boundary.

  • No flash: swap in a fresh battery and retest. Still nothing: work through collar troubleshooting.
  • Flash: the signal is fine. Check collar fit and contact points against the skin (long or double coats block contact), then treat it as training regression and return to boundary training.

False Dead-Collar Reads

Repeated testing inside the zone can trip the collar's Over-Correction-Protection shutoff. If a working collar goes silent mid-test, step out of the boundary zone, let it reset, and retest before declaring it dead.

Locate a Buried Break

30-60 min

For broken loops that Step 2 didn't fix, cheapest method first:

1. The divide method (free). Disconnect one boundary wire from the transmitter. Run a scrap length of wire overland from that free terminal to a splice point near the loop's midpoint. Loop light comes back: the break is in the half you cut out. Still broken: it's in the half still connected. Re-split the bad half until you've cornered the break.

2. AM radio (free). Tune a portable AM radio to static around 530-600 kHz and walk it just above the wire path. The static changes or fades right past the break. Caveats: the wire must stay energized (many transmitters stop transmitting on a full break), and some brands' signals don't register on AM at all.

3. Wire locator ($30-60/day rental as of mid-2026). Hook it to the transmitter terminals and walk the perimeter; its tone drops out at the break, putting you within a foot or two, one small hole instead of a trench. Once you've found it, splice it right (wire nut, strain-relief knot, gel-filled capsule) per the wire repair guide. Breaks cluster at:

  • Corroded or non-waterproofed splices, also a frequent source of partial breaks that come and go in wet weather
  • Driveway and sidewalk crossings, especially plow and shovel edges
  • Bed-edging lines and anywhere the yard was aerated or dug
  • The wire's exit point from the house

Check for Interference

If the loop is intact but the warning fires in odd places, walk the area with the test light and note where it triggers. Common sources:

  • Boundary wire running parallel within 5 feet of buried or overhead electrical, phone, TV, or satellite lines: cross utilities at 90 degrees instead of running alongside them
  • Transmitter mounted within 3 feet of large metal objects or appliances (10 feet of clearance is even better)
  • Metal fences, downspouts, rebar in concrete, and metal sheds along the wire path

Recalibrate Boundary Width

The width dial sets signal strength, not feet. The numbers don't map to a distance. After any repair:

  1. Take the collar off the dog and clip on the test light.
  2. Hold the collar at dog-neck height and walk toward the wire until it beeps.
  3. Adjust the dial until the total warning zone is 12-24 feet wide (both sides combined), then re-walk the full perimeter to verify the beep line.

If the transmitter shows no power on a known-good outlet, the unit itself has failed, usually surge damage. Before a Storm

No module blocks a close strike. Lightning within 1-2 miles can kill an unprotected unit. When storms roll in, unplug the transmitter AND disconnect both loop wires from it.
