Hundreds of feet of buried copper act like an antenna: a strike within 1-2 miles induces a spike that rides the loop straight into the terminals, no direct hit required. That is why both major manuals tell you to disconnect the loop, not just the plug, before storms.

A fence-rated module clamps both doors at once. The transmitter's power adapter plugs into the module, and both loop wires route through the module's terminal pairs, so every path into the transmitter passes through protection first. Pick the Mounting Spot

The transmitter needs a dry indoor spot (garage, basement, or utility room) within cord's reach of a grounded three-prong outlet. The surge module requires real grounding: a two-prong outlet with a cheater adapter protects nothing, so pick a different wall or have an electrician add a grounded receptacle.

Placement rules:

  • At least 3 feet from large metal objects and appliances: furnace, water heater, breaker panel. The 10-foot figure some guides quote is optional caution, not spec
  • 2-3 feet off the floor, above slab moisture and hose splash, with the loop light at eye level
  • Dry means dry year-round, not a shed wall that sweats every spring

A GFCI-protected outlet is fine. Just know a tripped GFCI shuts the fence off silently. After any trip or outage, glance at the loop light before the dog goes out. Route the Lead-In Through the Wall

The two wires running from the boundary loop back to the transmitter get twisted around each other, 10 to 12 twists per foot. Twisting cancels the signal, so your dog crosses the lead-in line freely. The full technique is in twisted pair wire runs.

Drill a small hole through the wall or rim joist near the transmitter, feed the twisted pair inside, and seal the hole with silicone caulk. Leave enough tail to reach the module with slack, since a drum-tight lead-in pulls loose over time.

Wire the Surge Module

Mount the module at the outlet and plug the transmitter's power adapter into it, never straight into the wall. Then route the loop through it: the twisted-pair ends land on the module's loop terminals, and two short jumpers run from the module's transmitter terminals to the boundary terminals on the transmitter itself. Every wire now passes through the module before it touches the transmitter.

Strip 3/8 to 1/2 inch of insulation for each terminal and leave no copper exposed past the screw. Don't plug anything in yet. Power comes last.

Add the Ground Wire (Units With a Ground Terminal)

Some transmitters add a second layer: a dedicated ground terminal plus two internal 250V/1A fuses. Run 14-18 AWG solid copper from the terminal to your home's grounding electrode, the ground rod at the meter or panel. Keep the run short, with swept gradual bends rather than sharp 90-degree turns.

Units without a ground terminal have no ground step: the plug-in module is the protection layer.

Complete the Loop, Then Power On

15-20 min

Power on only after the boundary loop is a complete, spliced circle back to the module. An open loop just sounds the break alarm, and you can't calibrate a boundary against a dead field.

Plug in and read the unit: a steady loop light means the circuit is good; a beep every second means a full wire break somewhere in the loop. With the light steady, set the boundary width by walk-test with the collar and test light. The full procedure is in setting boundary width and testing.

Before Every Storm#

The protocol from both major manuals is two motions: unplug the transmitter from the module, and disconnect both loop wires from the terminals. Unplugging alone closes the outlet path only. The loop wires still tie hundreds of feet of buried antenna to your transmitter.

Unplug Is Half the Job

Unplugging protects against outlet-side surges only. Pull both loop wires too. The buried wire is the door lightning actually uses.

One distinction worth keeping straight: a battery backup is outage protection, not surge protection. It keeps the loop energized when the power fails, and does nothing about a spike arriving on the loop wire.

After a Suspected Strike#

Work the checks cheapest-first, because many "dead" transmitters aren't.

  1. Fuse check (free). On units with internal fuses, pull both 250V/1A fuses per your manual and inspect or meter them. A blown fuse plus a working replacement often means the protection did its job.
  2. Adapter and outlet check (free). Reset any tripped GFCI or breaker, test the outlet with a lamp, and swap the power adapter if you have a compatible spare. A dead adapter mimics a dead transmitter.
  3. Loop light triage. Power up with the loop connected. Steady loop light: the transmitter survived. Walk-test the boundary before trusting it. A beep every second: full wire break.   4. Replace the transmitter, keep the wire. If the unit is truly dead, the buried loop is usually undamaged and reusable. Know the Limits#

No module makes the system stormproof. A close or direct strike can overwhelm plug-in protection, which is exactly why the manuals still tell you to unplug and disconnect before storms even with the module installed. The quieter risk is silence. A storm at 3 a.m. can leave the fence dead with zero visible sign, and the boundary your dog respects is suddenly unenforced.
