The boundary is a physical thing

An underground fence is not software. It is a loop of copper carrying a signal, a field anchored to that wire, and a collar that listens. Start here and the rest of the system makes sense.

One continuous circuit#

The wire leaves the transmitter, encircles the entire house, and comes home. Every door opens into contained space.

One continuous circuit. The wire leaves the transmitter on the garage wall, runs a short twisted pair along the side of the house, and joins the loop at a gel-capsule splice (the amber node). The loop encircles the entire house, so every door opens into the green contained area, and it crosses the driveway on its way around. Training flags mark the beep line every 10 feet. The twisted section carries no correction field: your dog walks over it freely.

The field and the dial#

The dial sets signal strength, not feet. A walk test puts the beep line where you want it, aiming for 12-24 feet of total width.

The dial is signal strength, not feet. Turning the dial grows the field, which surrounds the wire and reaches bothdirections. The collar tones in the outer band and corrects only near the wire itself. Start narrow, then widen until a walk-test at your dog's neck height puts the beep line where you want it, aiming for 12-24 ft of total width. Your dog learns that the tone means turn back.

The twisted-pair trick#

Twist the two return conductors 10-12 times per foot and their fields cancel. Your dog crosses that run all day without a tone.

The twisted pair is the loop's two ends, braided together on the run back to the transmitter. The same signal flows out one conductor and back the other, so a tight twist (10-12 per foot) cancels the field: no tone, no correction anywhere along that run. The rest of the loop stays live on both sides of the wire. Loose twists (3-4 per foot) cancel poorly and leave a flickering live zone, so make it a tight braid or no braid at all.

Part 2 of 6

Build it so it stays working

Almost every dead fence traces back to one of four things: shallow wire, a bad crossing, a failed splice, or a lightning surge. Each has a known fix, and each fix fits in one picture. And before any of it: the free call that keeps your shovel out of the gas line.

Call 811 before the shovel#

Free, and the marks take 2-3 business days. The paint colors are a national code: a map of everything you must not hit.

The marks are a map of everything you must not hit. File the free 811 ticket, then wait the notice period: commonly 2 full business days, 3 in some states, and your ticket states when you are legal to dig. The paint that shows up follows one national color code: red is electric, yellow is gas, orange is communications, blue is water. Hand-dig inside the tolerance zone around every mark and keep powered equipment out of it, and cross utilities at a right angle rather than running alongside them. One catch to plan for: 811 marks member utilities' lines only, typically street to meter. Sprinklers, propane runs, power to outbuildings, and old pet-fence wire are yours to find.

Why depth matters#

Aerators and edgers work the top 3 inches of your lawn. Wire at 4-6 inches lets them pass overhead; the signal is identical either way.

The aerator doesn't know your wire is there. Depth is what saves it. Core aerator tines reach about 3 inches and lawn edgers cut 2 to 3, which is exactly where the kit manual's 1-3 inch trench puts your wire. At 4-6 inches, the pro-crew depth, the same tools pass overhead with room to spare. The signal doesn't care either way: the correction field is set by the transmitter dial and your walk test, not by depth, so going deeper buys durability and costs nothing. Whatever the depth, flag the line before anyone aerates, dethatches, or edges.

Crossing a driveway#

An existing expansion joint is free. Otherwise one shallow saw cut, a seated wire, and matched sealant do the job.

Joint first, kerf second. If an expansion joint lines up with your route, lay the wire in it and seal: no cutting. Otherwise one pass with a circular saw and a masonry blade opens a kerf about 1/2 inch deep; press the wire to the bottom, coil 2-3 feet of slack at each pavement edge, and seal with caulk matched to the surface (silicone or concrete caulk on concrete, asphalt caulk on blacktop). Deepen the cut where pavement meets lawn, because plow blades and edgers find that transition first. Crossing gravel or dirt instead? Sleeve the wire in 1/2-inch PVC conduit or an old garden hose, never metal pipe.

The splice that survives burial#

Most future breaks happen at splices, so this joint gets a wire nut, a strain-relief knot, and a gel capsule. Tape alone fails underground.

Strain relief before the capsule. Strip 3/8-1/2 in to bright copper, twist the ends together under a wire nut sized for your gauge with no copper showing, then tie both wires in a loose knot 3-4 inches from the nut so a tug loads the knot, not the joint. Only then push the nut into a gel-filled capsule until gel surrounds it and snap it shut. Bare wire nuts, electrical tape, and crimp-only connectors all fail underground; sealed in gel, the splice lasts the life of the wire: 15-20 years. Pull-test, rebury to the run's depth, and record the spot on your yard map: most future breaks happen at splices.

Lightning has two doors in#

A power strip guards the outlet. Surges also arrive on the buried loop itself, which is why fence-rated protection clamps both.

A surge has two doors in: the outlet and the loop. A strike within 1-2 miles induces a spike on hundreds of feet of buried copper, and it rides the loop wire straight into the terminals. A power strip guards the outlet door only. The fence-rated module (about $22 as of mid-2026) closes the other one: both loop wires land on its terminals and the power adapter plugs into it, so every path in passes through protection and the spike is clamped to ground instead of your transmitter. Units with a ground terminal add a second layer, 14-18 AWG solid copper to the home grounding electrode. Even with the module, unplug and pull both loop wires before storms.

Keep-out islands inside the yard#

A second live loop around a pool or garden, fed by a twisted run the dog never feels, blocks one spot while the rest of the yard stays open.

The island is a second live loop, fed by a run the dog never feels. Signal leaves the perimeter at two gel-capsule splices (the only splices in the job), flows down one conductor of the run, around the island ring, and back up the other. Twisted at 10-12 twists per foot, the run cancels: no tone, no correction, and your dog crosses it all day. The ring itself stays live, so the collar fires at the island line exactly as it does at the perimeter. Keep the ring at least 5 feet from the perimeter wire, flag its beep line every 10 feet, and the dog keeps the whole green yard while the pool stays off limits.

Train the map into your dog

The hardware draws the line. The 14-day training program is what moves that line into your dog's head, and the collar's fit rules are what keep the whole thing humane.

Day 0 to day 30#

Five phases, flags that thin out on a schedule, and a dog that ends up turning back at a line it can no longer see.

Flags are scaffolding: phases build, then the flags come down. Phases 1-4 are the 14-day core: Flag Recognition (days 1-3, collar off), Warning Tone Only (days 4-7), Static Correction (days 8-10), and Distraction-Proofing (days 11-14) on a long line. Phase 5 keeps weeks 3-4 supervised off-leash. Once your dog reliably retreats at the tone, normally in the day 15-30 window, pull every other flag, wait 4 days, and repeat (flags are up 4-6 weeks total). Most dogs earn unsupervised access around day 30, turning back at a line they can no longer see.

Fit is the safety system#

Collar injuries are pressure injuries, and pressure is controlled by fit, repositioning, and wear time. One finger under the strap is the whole test.

Pressure, not shocks, causes collar injuries. Fit controls the pressure. Fit standing, high on the neck, contacts touching skin through a parted coat (dense coats: trim a patch or fit longer 1-inch tips). One finger flat under the strap is the whole test: tighter concentrates pressure on the contact spots, looser lets the receiver slide and rub, and both cause the pressure sores this guide exists to prevent. Then the habits that matter as much as fit: reposition the collar every 1-2 hours, keep wear under 12 hours a day with at least 8 collar-free hours, take it off overnight, and run a 10-second skin check daily.

When a squirrel runs#

Drive is faster than the fence. Staged-trigger training over 3-5 weeks builds the one skill first training never taught: stopping mid-chase.

Drive is faster than the fence. Training is what holds. A dog in full chase crosses the correction field in a fraction of a second, and a correction too weak to interrupt drive teaches your dog it's survivable: that's how run-throughs are learned. The honest baseline is the JAVMA owner survey, where 44 percent of electronically fenced dogs escaped at least once. Chase-proofing closes the gap with 3-5 weeks of staged triggers, building the skill the first fence training never taught: stopping at the line with a squirrel already running. Before any of that, work the hardware ladder: battery, contact fit, boundary width, then level.

Keep it alive

A wired system runs for a decade, and the upkeep that gets it there costs $30-60 a year and about ten minutes a season. Here is the whole ownership calendar.

The system runs for a decade. The upkeep fits on one line. Swap the collar battery every 3 months on a fixed schedule ($5-10; it dies without warning), and walk the boundary with the test light monthly in winter, quarterly the rest of the year. Each season adds one job: a spring wire check after thaw, a summer look at collar fit and contact points, flagging your crossings before plow season, and winter's special rules, batteries every 6 weeks because cold cuts battery life 30-40 percent, and a retest standing on packed snow once it passes 12 inches, widening the dial for the season. When something breaks

A cut wire is a solved problem. The locator tone walks you to within a foot or two of the break, and the splice above puts it back together. For live diagnosis of any fault, the free troubleshooter asks the questions a tech would.

The tone drops at the break. Power off the transmitter, disconnect both wire ends, clip the locator's signal generator to one end, push its ground stake into bare soil, and walk the line: steady tone over intact wire, silence past the break, putting you within a foot or two. Mark the spot with tape or a flag. Rentals run $30-60 a day as of mid-2026; the locator in our Locate & Repair kit does the same job and is yours to keep for the next break. The free version is an AM radio tuned near 530-600 kHz walked directly over the wire; the static fades past the break. Both tricks find only full breaks, and breaks cluster at driveway and plow edges like this one. If the fence cuts out intermittently instead of dying, suspect a corroded splice instead.

Why the wire beats the wireless alternatives

GPS and wireless fences answer the same question with an estimate instead of a field. The physics of that difference is measurable, and we measured it.

One signal travels 12,550 miles. The other travels a few feet. A GPS fix rides a whisper of a signal through the ionosphere, weather, tree canopy, and reflections off your own house before the collar can do math on it. The buried wire generates its field right there in the ground, a few feet from your dog's collar, and nothing between orbit and your lawn is invited to edit it.

The line you draw is not the line the collar enforces. A GPS collar never knows where the boundary is; it only knows where the satellites say the dog is, and that estimate wanders 10-15 ft by the makers' own numbers, more under trees or beside the house. Your dog can take a correction sitting still in the middle of the yard, so the drawn line is really a band, and the makers themselves tell you to keep it 15-25 ft back from any road. A buried wire has no estimate to drift: the trigger line sits exactly where the wire does, every day.
