Twisted-Pair Wire Runs: When, Why, and How to Twist
Twisting two wires 10-12 turns per foot cancels the fence signal so your dog can cross. Where twisted pair goes, how to twist, and what leaves a run live.

Every install needs at least one twisted-pair run: the wire between the transmitter and the boundary loop. Twist two wires together at 10-12 turns per foot and their signals cancel. Your dog crosses that stretch with no warning and no correction.
There is no "neutral" setting on the transmitter. Cancellation is physical: whatever you twist goes dead, whatever you leave untwisted is active boundary.
What twisting does#
Boundary wire is a low-power radio antenna. Current from the transmitter creates a field the collar detects. In a twisted pair, the two wires carry current in opposite directions, so their fields cancel within a few inches. The collar reads nothing.
Where you need twisted pair#
Three places:

Transmitter to loop start: the transmitter sits in a garage or basement, not on the boundary. The run from there to where the loop begins must be twisted, or the collar fires at the garage door. Siting and surge-protecting that box is covered in transmitter setup.

The connector between loops in a split-zone layout: two loops join with one spliced twisted run the dog crosses freely. Every split zone still keeps the entire house inside contained space, so the dog can exit any door safely (see layout patterns for the designs we recommend).

The connector to an interior exclusion loop: a pool or garden exclusion zone is its own small loop, joined to the main loop with twisted pair.
You can't twist the middle of a loop
A single wire cannot cancel itself. Folding or spiraling one conductor still radiates signal. A free crossing needs a spliced two-conductor twisted run, and twisted sections splice only between two single-wire sections, never into the middle of one run.

Identify where you need a neutral path
5 minLay out the full loop on the ground first, then mark every stretch the dog must cross without a correction: the transmitter run, a split-zone connector, an exclusion-loop connector. Twisting the wrong section almost always means the layout wasn't final. Lay out first, twist second.
Cut two equal lengths of wire
5 minCut both pieces about 10% longer than the straight-line distance (twisting shortens the run). Keep the two wires equal length; if one comes up short, you're forced into an extra splice.
There's a budget to respect: twisted footage counts double against your transmitter's rated wire capacity, and twisted runs should stay under half the total loop length (one manufacturer publishes that cap). Enter the twisted run in the wire calculator to check your totals.

Twist 10-12 turns per foot

Anchor one pair of ends in a vise or locked pliers, grip the other two ends together in a cordless drill chuck, run it on slow speed, and walk backward. The wire twists itself evenly.
By hand: anchor one end and twist as you walk back. Either way, target 10-12 full twists per foot. Mark a 1-ft section and count the spiral peaks. Visibly loose stretches (3-4 twists per foot) leak signal and become an unintended boundary. Don't overshoot either: over-twisting can kink and damage the wire.

Connect the pair at the transmitter and the loop
15 minAt the transmitter, connect one twisted wire to each output terminal.
At the loop end, cut the boundary wire where the twisted run meets it, then splice one twisted wire to each cut end. Current flows out one twisted wire, splits at the splice, travels both directions around the loop, and returns through the other twisted wire.
Make each splice the manual way: strip 3/8-1/2 in, cap with a wire nut leaving no exposed copper, tie a strain-relief knot 3-4 in back, and seal the joint in a gel-filled splice capsule (our store). Record every splice location, because most wire breaks happen at splices (full splice procedure).
Test the run, then bury it
10-25 minClip the test light across the collar's contact points, hold the collar at dog-neck height, and walk the full twisted run. Silent and dark the whole way is a pass. Any beep or flash means a loose or flat section, so pull it up and retwist.
Then bury the pair 4-6 in deep, same as the active boundary wire; sharing a trench with active wire is fine. Burial protects the wire but isn't needed for cancellation. Call 811 before any trenching (why and how). Under a driveway, sleeve the pair in PVC conduit or old garden hose per the crossings guide.
Pipe is not a substitute for twisting
Plastic or metal pipe does not cancel the signal. Only twisting does. Untwisted wire in conduit stays fully active, and metal pipe actively interferes with the signal. Sleeve in PVC or hose, never metal.
One honest limit: the walk test proves the run is neutral today, not forever. A splice that pulls apart later fails silently, so recheck twisted sections during your monthly boundary walk. If the collar starts chirping along a twisted run, work through the troubleshooter before digging anything up.
How twisted pair fits common layouts#
- Full loop, single zone: one twisted run, transmitter to loop start.
- Split zone: two twisted runs total, one from the transmitter into the first loop, plus one spliced twisted connector that carries the circuit into the second loop and back. No third run returns from the second loop to the transmitter; the return path is already inside the pairs.
- Shared-wall or narrow-lot properties: do not improvise a partial loop. Have a qualified underground-fence professional design a complete closed-loop route, then use twisted pair only where the approved plan needs a neutral connecting run.
When to hand it off#
Twisting is the easy part; multi-zone routing is where plans go wrong. If your yard needs three or more twisted runs, sketch it in the fence planner and request a professional install quote from the estimate panel. A local professional installer plans the whole wire route as one design.
