The Best Dog Fence Layouts for Every Yard Shape
Full-perimeter loops, backyard-heavy layouts, and exclusion islands: footage math for every yard shape, plus the double-back and hourglass patterns to skip.
Every underground dog fence is the same circuit: one continuous loop of wire that leaves the transmitter and comes back to it. What separates a clean install from a callback is the shape of that loop. The layout determines how much wire you buy, where the signal field sits, and whether your tomatoes survive August.
Here are the three layouts that cover most residential properties, with real footage math for each, plus the two competitor-published patterns we tell you to skip and adjustments for the three lot shapes that trip people up: corners, pies, and acreage.
First, the one trick that makes every layout work: twisted pair#
When you twist the two legs of boundary wire tightly around each other (10 to 12 twists per foot, or buy pre-twisted wire), their signals cancel. The twisted section carries the circuit but produces no correction field. Your dog walks straight over it. The twisted-pair wire runs guide covers when and how to twist.
That's the whole tool kit. Active wire makes a boundary; twisted wire makes a neutral connection. Every layout below is a different arrangement of those two.
Twist rate matters
Loose twists, 3 or 4 per foot, cancel poorly and leave a weak, flickering field your dog will get random corrections from. Hand-twist a drill chuck onto both wires and spin, or spend the extra $10-20 on pre-twisted wire for the transmitter run. It's the cheapest insurance in the whole install.
The flip side of cancellation is the layout rule people break most often:
Parallel runs need 6 feet of separation
Two active boundary wires running parallel start cancelling each other below about 6 feet of separation. At 2 feet apart, the field is effectively dead, and your dog will find that gap in week three. Keep every parallel active run at least 6 feet apart (narrow side yards are where this bites) and add margin if you run wide boundary settings. It's also a big part of why the double-back and hourglass patterns further down went wrong often enough that we stopped publishing them.
Layout 1: the full-perimeter loop#
The default, and the right call for most fenced-intent suburban lots: one loop around the whole property, dog gets front yard, backyard, and sides.
When to use it: rectangular lots, dogs that greet the mail carrier politely, households that use the front door for play. Also the simplest trench plan: one continuous path, no doubling.
Footage math: take a 100 x 150 ft lot, about 1/3 acre. Perimeter at the property line is 500 ft. Pull the wire in 5 ft on all sides (you never want the correction zone reaching the sidewalk) and the loop is (90 + 140) × 2 = 460 ft of active wire. Add a twisted-pair run from the garage transmitter to the loop (say 30 ft of trench, 60 ft of wire) and you're at roughly 520 ft. Buy 20% over: a 500 ft kit spool plus one extra 500 ft roll (about $65 as of mid-2026) covers it with slack for splices.
Common mistake: hugging the house too tight on the transmitter side. If the boundary wire passes within 8-10 ft of a door your dog uses, the signal field can bleed across the threshold and your dog starts refusing the back steps. Keep the loop off the house walls, and remember the field projects both directions from the wire.
Layout 2: the backyard-heavy loop#
You want the dog's territory concentrated out back and the front yard mostly off-limits: no flags by the curb, no boundary field across the front walk.
How it works: it is still one loop around the entire house. That part is non-negotiable, because your dog needs to exit any door into contained space, not just the back one. Instead of tracking the front property line, the front leg of the loop pulls in to an 8-10 ft buffer off the front wall. The dog keeps the whole backyard, both side yards, and a narrow apron at the front door; the rest of the front yard sits outside the boundary.
When to use it: busy streets, unfenced front yards, households that only ever play out back. You keep full-perimeter safety (a door-dash out the front lands the dog inside the boundary, not loose) while the curb stays flag-free.
Footage math: same lot, house set 50 ft back from the street. The back leg is unchanged (90 ft), the two side legs shorten to about 105 ft each, and the front leg crosses on the buffer line (about 90 ft). Roughly 390 ft of active wire, about 15% less than the full perimeter, with every door still covered. Check your own numbers with the wire calculator before you order.
Common mistake: hugging the front wall. Keep that front leg a full 8-10 ft off the house. The field projects both directions from the wire, and a leg tight to the wall bleeds correction through the front-door threshold. The layout patterns guide has the compliant drawing.
The layouts we skip: backyard double-back and hourglass#
Competitor planning pages, including one national professional-install brand, publish two more patterns: the backyard-only double-back (wire around three sides of the backyard, doubled back on itself, with the house as the fourth wall) and the hourglass (front and back lobes pinched tight along the side walls of the house). We publish neither. If an installer proposes one, ask why.
Both cut the house out of the contained area or press live boundary against it, and that's the core flaw: your dog doesn't use just one door. A double-back leaves the front door opening onto uncontained ground: one door-dash and the dog is loose with no boundary anywhere. The hourglass bleeds field toward side doors and windows and permanently blocks the dog's own path between front and back; owners discover this carrying a 70 lb dog through the house every yard switch.
They are also the two patterns most likely to fail electrically. A double-back depends on holding parallel active runs 6+ ft apart for their entire length, and an hourglass corridor needs about 10 ft of correction-free walking room between fields. With an 8 ft boundary width on each side, that's 26 ft of total corridor before the math works. And because the transmitter dial sets signal strength, not feet, the only way to know your real widths is to walk-test them with the collar.
What to run instead: the backyard-heavy loop above delivers "front yard off-limits" with every door still contained, an exclusion island (next section) fences off a specific hazard inside the yard, and a side yard facing traffic gets the corner-lot pull-in from the adjustments below.
Layout 3: exclusion islands (the wire fences things out, too)#
This is the layout move most DIYers never learn: an interior loop keeps the dog out of something inside the main boundary. Garden beds, pools, koi ponds, septic mounds, the kids' play set.
How it works: from the main loop (or transmitter), run a twisted pair out to the feature (neutral, so the dog walks over it freely), then split the wires into an active loop around the thing you're protecting, and twist them again on the way back. The island is hot; the path to it is neutral, so the collar ignores it.
Footage math: a 20 x 30 ft vegetable garden with a 3 ft buffer needs a (26 + 36) × 2 = 124 ft active loop. If it sits 25 ft off the main loop, the twisted run adds 50 ft of wire in 25 ft of trench. Total add: about 175 ft. A 20 x 40 ft pool with a 6 ft deck buffer runs (32 + 52) × 2 = 168 ft. Islands are cheap insurance: one extra spool covers two or three of them.
Common mistake: skimping on the buffer. People set narrow boundary widths on islands to "save space," and a fast dog blows through a 2 ft warning zone at a dead run. The double-back and hourglass don't get table rows for the same reason they don't get sections: we don't recommend a layout whose failure mode is a loose dog at the front door.
Adjustments for the three problem lot shapes#
Corner lots#
Two street frontages means two sides of traffic, pedestrians, and passing dogs. Pull the wire 10-15 ft inside both street-side property lines, not the usual 5. You lose a strip of grass; you gain a warning zone that never overlaps a passing leashed dog (fence-line frustration is a real training setback), and you stay clear of the utility easements that almost always occupy the first 10 ft of a corner lot. Pie lots (cul-de-sac wedges)#
Narrow at the street, wide at the back, with sharp angles. Two rules:
- Round every corner tighter than 90 degrees. Take the turn as a 3-4 ft radius arc instead of a hard angle. Sharp corners create a concentrated, unstable spike in the field and an inconsistent correction zone: the dog gets zapped at 8 ft on the approach and 3 ft on the exit, which sabotages boundary training.
- Check the front-yard pinch math. A 40 ft frontage with wire down both sides at 8 ft boundary width and 5 ft setbacks leaves a 14 ft clean corridor. Workable, but tight. If your frontage is under 35 ft, don't pinch. Pull the front leg back to the house-face buffer line (the backyard-heavy loop above) and let the front yard go. The same field-width math dominates small lots under a quarter acre.
Acreage with tree lines#
A square 2-acre parcel carries roughly 1,180 ft of perimeter, which means your 500 ft kit spool plus two extra 500 ft rolls (about $65 each as of mid-2026) minimum. The large-property guide covers loop capacity and wire choice at acreage scale; three field-tested adjustments here:
- Don't trench the tree line. Offset inside it. Pull the wire 10-15 ft inside the woods' edge. Trenching through root mass is miserable, and roots heave and abrade buried wire over the years.
- In genuinely wooded sections, surface-pin instead of burying. Landscape staples every 3-4 ft, let leaf litter cover it. Nothing mows in there; burial buys you nothing.
- Upgrade the gauge. Kit wire is 20 AWG. For 1,000+ ft rural loops, 16 or 14 AWG direct-burial wire costs more but shrugs off the stretching, freeze-thaw, and critter damage that kills thin wire on big loops. Long loops also mean long walks to find a break, so buy durability up front.
